About Evoluent
Evoluent is a California company built around a single invention: founder Jack Lo patented the vertical mouse shape in 1994 after his own discomfort with conventional mice, then spent years trying to license the design to established mouse makers before deciding to manufacture and sell it himself. After an improved prototype drew an enthusiastic response at Comdex Las Vegas in 2001, the first Evoluent VerticalMouse shipped in late 2002 — the design that defined the vertical mouse category and that every mouse in it is still measured against.
That original launch drew coverage from PC World, The Wall Street Journal, and BusinessWeek Online, and the VerticalMouse went on to take First Place at the Ergonoma Mouse Contest in Belgium in 2004. Evoluent has since expanded the VerticalMouse line through several generations — the C, D, and current 4 series — alongside ergonomic keyboards, while keeping the same fully upright, handshake-position sculpt that occupational therapists and hand surgeons have recommended since the original launch.

Why we recognized Evoluent
The DeskRated Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose products consistently stand out in our hands-on category reviews. Evoluent earned it on the strength of the products below, evaluated the same way every product on this site is: bought, used at a real desk, and judged on merit.
Evoluent products we rated highly
Evoluent VerticalMouse 4 (VM4RW) Wireless
The original vertical mouse design and still the deepest pronation relief we tested — a fully upright sculpt with a pronounced thumb rest and finger ledges that support the whole hand in a static neutral posture. Six fully programmable buttons with per-application mapping make it the most customizable pick we tested, and it remains a fixture on power-user, CAD, and finance desks where maximum posture correction matters more than price.

- Invented the category — Jack Lo patented the vertical mouse shape in 1994 and shipped the first Evoluent VerticalMouse in 2002, the reference design every vertical mouse since has been measured against.
- Independently covered at launch by PC World, The Wall Street Journal, and BusinessWeek Online, and awarded First Place at the 2004 Ergonoma Mouse Contest in Belgium.
- The steepest, most fully upright handshake angle we tested, which our own review found delivers the most complete forearm-pronation relief of any mouse in the category.
- Six fully programmable buttons with per-application mapping in the Evoluent driver, the deepest customization of any vertical mouse we tested.
- A long clinical track record: recommended by occupational therapists and hand surgeons, and specified by occupational-health programs where posture correction is the priority.
