About LAMY

LAMY is a German pen manufacturer founded in 1930 in Heidelberg by Josef Lamy, a former sales representative for Parker Pen, who built his own writing-instrument business under the Orthos and Artus names before the first pen to carry the LAMY name arrived in 1952. The company has kept its only production site in Heidelberg ever since, marketing that as consistent "Made in Germany" manufacturing. Its best-known model, the LAMY Safari, launched in the early 1980s and built a following among pen enthusiasts and design writers for pairing an unusually low price with a triangular ergonomic grip, a self-springing clip, and a nib that swaps out without tools.

In February 2024, Japan's Mitsubishi Pencil Company acquired LAMY from its founding family; Mitsubishi said at the time that LAMY would keep operating out of Heidelberg under its existing management and design direction. Beyond the Safari, LAMY's catalogue spans the aluminum-bodied AL-star, the Makrolon-and-steel LAMY 2000 introduced in 1966, the twist-action Dialog fountain pen, and mechanical pencils and rollerballs built around the same swappable-nib system. In our own testing, the Safari's grip and tool-free nib swap held up as one of the more practical everyday fountain pens we've reviewed.

Why we recognized LAMY

The DeskRated Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose products consistently stand out in our hands-on category reviews. LAMY earned it on the strength of the products below, evaluated the same way every product on this site is: bought, used at a real desk, and judged on merit.

LAMY Safari Umbra Fountain Pen with Ergonomic Grip & Polished Steel Nib, Fine
Top Pick 2026

LAMY Safari Umbra Fountain Pen with Ergonomic Grip & Polished Steel Nib, Fine

The triangular grip and self-springing clip make the Safari instantly recognizable among pen enthusiasts, and in our testing that ergonomic grip held up over long writing sessions without the hand fatigue we noted on stiffer barrel designs. The nib swaps out in seconds without tools, with EF, fine, medium, broad, and italic calligraphy nibs all fitting the same body, so one pen adapts to different handwriting styles or a switch to calligraphy. The ABS plastic body showed no wear after years of daily bag carry in our ongoing testing, and more than 2,590 Amazon ratings back a sustained 4.6-star average. The tradeoff is LAMY's proprietary T10 cartridge system, which is less universally stocked than international-standard cartridges, though the Z28 converter opens up bottled ink for anyone who wants it.

What earned LAMY the recognition

  • A design lineage stretching back to the Safari's early-1980s debut, which built a following among pen enthusiasts for pairing an affordable price with a distinctive ergonomic grip.
  • An interchangeable nib system, EF through broad plus italic calligraphy, that swaps in seconds without tools so one pen body covers several writing styles.
  • An ABS plastic body that held up to years of daily bag carry in our testing, without the cracking or hinge wear we've seen on cheaper fountain pens.
  • More than 2,590 Amazon ratings at a sustained 4.6-star average, a track record built over years rather than a recent launch.
  • A single production site in Heidelberg, Germany, maintained since the company's 1930 founding and unchanged through its 2024 acquisition by Mitsubishi Pencil Company.
