How to use this tool

  1. Set the diagonal and aspect ratio for each monitor. Type the inch size (e.g., 27) and pick the aspect ratio (16:9 standard, 21:9 ultrawide, 32:9 super ultrawide, 16:10 productivity, 4:3 legacy, 3:2 Surface). The visual canvas re-renders to true relative scale on every input change — no Calculate button.
  2. Add resolution if you want PPI. Enter horizontal × vertical pixels (e.g., 2560 × 1440) and the tool calculates pixels-per-inch. Skip if you don't need it — the rest of the comparison still works.
  3. Enter your desk width and read the verdict. The fit chip turns green (fits with 6" buffer for cabling), amber (fits but tight), or rose (won't fit). Why this tool is different from other monitor comparison sites

Most online monitor comparison tools stop at "here's the size difference." They show you two rectangles, give you width and height, and call it a day. The problem is that's not actually the buyer's question — the buyer's question is will this fit and what else do I need? Every tool we built ours against ships at most a partial answer. Here's what's different:

  • Three-monitor support. Most comparison tools cap at two displays. If you're planning a triple-24" or dual-27"-plus-vertical setup, you need a third slot. We give you three.
  • Desk-fit verdict, not just numbers. Type your desk width and the tool tells you fits / fits-tight / won't-fit, factoring in a 6" buffer for monitor arm clearance and cabling. None of the SERP competitors take desk width as an input.
  • Combined width + max height for multi-monitor setups. Useful for checking whether a triple-monitor configuration clears the cubicle dividers or fits inside a hutch.

How this tool works (the math)

Every display dimension follows from one trigonometric identity: a rectangle with diagonal D and aspect ratio W:H has width D × W / √(W² + H²) and height D × H / √(W² + H²). That's it — every measurement on this page derives from those two equations.

width = diagonal × W / √(W² + H²)

height = diagonal × H / √(W² + H²)

area = width × height

For pixels-per-inch (PPI), we use the actual pixel resolution rather than the marketing aspect ratio (because a 34" "21:9" ultrawide is technically 43:18 / 3440×1440):

PPI = √(pxW² + pxH²) / diagonal

Optimal viewing distance is derived from the standard horizontal field-of-view convention: 30° (productivity / focused work) to 40° (immersive / gaming). Closer than the 40° lower bound, the screen takes up too much peripheral vision and induces eye strain; farther than the 30° upper bound, you lose detail. The range output is width / (2 × tan(angle / 2)) for both endpoints.

The desk-fit verdict subtracts combined monitor width from desk width and applies a 6" comfort buffer (the standard ergonomic guidance for clearance behind monitors for cable routing, monitor arms, and reach to power outlets). Combined width is the literal sum of each active monitor's calculated width — the v1 simplifying assumption is zero bezel between displays, which is disclaimed below since real-world bezels add ~0.2-0.6" per edge.

Cross-validated against published manufacturer specs (LG, Samsung, Dell, Apple Studio Display) and the Howbigg comparison tool: 24" 16:9 = 20.9" × 11.8", 27" 16:9 = 23.5" × 13.2", 32" 16:9 = 27.9" × 15.7", 34" 21:9 = 31.3" × 13.4", 49" 32:9 = 47.2" × 13.3". The 24-vs-27 upgrade question

The most common single-monitor decision is whether to upgrade a 24" to a 27". The tool shows you the actual difference: 24" 16:9 is 20.9" × 11.8" (246 sq in), and 27" 16:9 is 23.5" × 13.2" (311 sq in). That's a 26% jump in screen area for a 12.5% jump in diagonal — which is why most reviewers describe the upgrade as "substantial." On a 48" desk, a 24" leaves 27" of clearance for keyboard / mouse / coffee; a 27" still leaves 24". Both fit comfortably, but if you're already considering a monitor stand or arm for ergonomic height adjustment, 27" gives the height headroom to keep the top of the screen at eye level without making the desk feel cramped.

Triple-24" wall on a 60" standing desk

A common developer / trader / call-center setup: three 24" 16:9 monitors side by side. The tool reports combined width of 62.8", which is over a standard 60" desk by 2.8" — verdict: won't fit. Either step up to a 72" desk (most standing desks ship in 60", 72", and 80" widths), drop one monitor, or angle the side monitors at ~10° to physically tighten the footprint. The tool's combined-width readout is what catches this before you order three monitors and discover it on assembly day. Pair with sturdy cable management — three monitors mean nine cables minimum.

32" 4K vs 49" 32:9 super-ultrawide

For a productivity-heavy single-monitor setup, the choice often comes down to a 32" 4K UHD (27.9" × 15.7", PPI ~138) vs a 49" 32:9 super-ultrawide (47.2" × 13.3", PPI ~108). The 49" gives you almost double the horizontal width but loses 2.4" of vertical and drops PPI by ~22%. On a 60" desk, the 49" leaves only 12.8" of clearance — enough for a keyboard but tight for a peripheral. The tool's verdict turns amber here, which is the right answer: it fits, but plan for cable management behind it because there's not much room to reach back. Most 49" buyers also pair with a USB-C dock since driving 5120×1440 from a laptop benefits from a single-cable connection.

Is this tool free? Do I need to sign up?

Yes free. No signup, no email, no login wall, no popup before the result. Every feature on this page — three-monitor comparison, desk-fit verdict, PPI calculation, share-link, PDF build sheet, and the embeddable widget — is free. There's no Pro tier. Sarah Chen, the DeskRated office-supplies reviewer, built this because the existing online tools either stopped at two monitors, hid the useful features behind paywalls, or didn't take desk width as an input.

Why does my 34" "21:9" ultrawide show slightly different numbers than the manufacturer spec?

Most 34" ultrawide panels with 3440×1440 resolution are technically 43:18 (≈ 2.389:1), not 21:9 (2.333:1) — the "21:9" label is a marketing convention. The width-and-height numbers in this tool are calculated from the aspect ratio you select, so picking 21:9 will be within ~0.2" of the manufacturer spec. The PPI calculation always uses the actual pixel resolution you enter, so PPI is exact regardless. If the difference matters, pick "Custom" in the aspect ratio dropdown and enter 43:18 directly — the tool supports any custom ratio.

How did you decide on a 6" buffer for the "fits comfortably" zone?

The 6" comfort buffer comes from the Cornell University Ergonomics Web "Computer Workstation Ergonomic Guidelines" and the HHS Office Ergonomics Guide — both recommend ~3" each side behind the monitors for cable routing, monitor arm clearance, and reach to power outlets. We use 6" total (3" per side, or 6" on one side if the monitors are flush-left against a wall). With less than 6" you're tight; with less than 0" you're actually over the desk edge.

Does the multi-monitor combined width account for bezels?

No — the v1 assumption is zero bezel. Real-world bezels add ~0.2-0.6" per edge (so two monitors side by side add ~0.4-1.2" to the combined width). For most setups that's small enough not to flip the verdict, but if you're sizing right at the edge of a desk, measure twice. The disclaimer is in the methodology section below. We'll add per-monitor bezel input in a future update — the math is straightforward, it's just an extra input field that v1 didn't need.

What aspect ratio should I pick for a 16:9 monitor with HDR / curved / 144Hz / etc.?

16:9. Curved panels, refresh rate, HDR support, panel type (IPS / VA / OLED), and color gamut don't change the physical dimensions — they're independent of the size and aspect ratio. The tool only cares about diagonal + aspect for size, plus pixel resolution for PPI. Pick the standard 16:9, 21:9, 32:9, 16:10, 4:3, or 3:2 that matches the panel's native ratio.

Once the size question is settled, the bottleneck is the rest of the desk: a monitor at the wrong height destroys your neck, a stack of cables behind the desk traps dust, and a too-narrow desk forces a compromise on the keyboard. After a decade of testing workstation gear, four products do most of the work:
