How to use this generator

  1. Pick a ruling. College for high-school and adult notebooks, wide for elementary, narrow for engineering or fountain-pen practice, primary for kindergarten handwriting, manuscript for cursive practice. Or hit Custom and slide to any spacing between 4 and 30 mm.
  2. Choose paper size and margins. Letter for US, A4 for international, Legal for long forms. Margin presets cover the four common cases: standard 1″, narrow 0.5″ for more space, 3-hole punch (extra room on the left), and Cornell layout (left summary column + bottom summary band).
  3. Add a header if you need one. Toggle the Name / Date / Subject row on for worksheets, classroom assignments, or signed forms. Type values into the fields and they print in the PDF — leave them blank to print just the labels and underlines.
  4. Download the PDF. The math runs on your device — nothing is uploaded. The file is named after your settings (e.g. lined-paper-college-rule-letter-2p.pdf) so it's easy to find later.

Why this generator is different from other lined-paper sites

Most printable-lined-paper sites are PDF directories — a list of fixed templates you click through and download. They work for the most common case (give me a sheet of college-rule Letter), but they break the moment you need anything specific: a 9 mm spacing for a fountain pen, an extra-wide left margin for a 3-hole binder, a kindergarten triple-line for a handwriting student, or a Cornell layout with a 2.5″ summary column. How this generator works (the math)

Lines per page is the floor of usable height divided by line spacing — both in points (1 inch = 72 points). Usable height is the paper height minus the top and bottom margins, the 24-point header offset (when the Name / Date / Subject row is on), and the Cornell footer height (when Cornell is selected):

Line spacing converts millimeters to points using lineSpacingPt = mm × (72 / 25.4). Paper sizes follow ISO 216 (A4: 595.28 × 841.89 pt) and ANSI/ASME Y14.1 (US Letter: 612 × 792 pt; US Legal: 612 × 1008 pt).

The five named ruling presets use these conventions:

  • Wide rule (8.7 mm / ~11/32″) — the standard wide-ruled spacing on Mead Five Star and ACCO products, used in elementary classrooms.
  • College rule (7.1 mm / ~9/32″) — the college-ruled spacing on most adult spiral notebooks (Mead, Roaring Spring, Five Star).
  • Narrow rule (6.4 mm / 1/4″) — narrow / engineering style; squeezes more lines into the page for dense note-taking.
  • Primary K (12 mm group, 3-line) — Zaner-Bloser kindergarten convention with a top guideline, dashed midline, and solid baseline.
  • Manuscript (9 mm group, 4-line) — manuscript / fountain-pen practice paper, four-line groups for cursive ascender / x-height / baseline / descender.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between college rule and wide rule?

Wide rule is 8.7 mm (about 11/32″) line spacing — what you'll see in elementary-school composition notebooks. College rule is 7.1 mm (about 9/32″) — slightly tighter, what you'll find in adult spiral notebooks like Mead Five Star. Wide rule fits about 26 lines on a Letter-sized page; college rule fits about 32. Use wide for younger writers and anyone with larger handwriting; college for adults and dense note-taking.

Can I use this for kindergarten handwriting practice?

Yes — pick the Primary K (12mm) preset. It draws three-line groups: a solid top guideline, a dashed midline (for lowercase letter height), and a solid baseline. This matches the Zaner-Bloser convention used in most kindergarten and 1st-grade classrooms. Each page fits 19 line groups when paired with standard 1″ margins.

What paper sizes are supported?

Three: US Letter (8.5″ × 11″), A4 (210 × 297 mm), and US Legal (8.5″ × 14″). Letter is the US default; A4 is the international standard outside North America; Legal is for long forms and certain legal documents. The preview adjusts its aspect ratio to match.

Will the lines print at the exact size I selected?

Yes — but only if your printer dialog is set to Actual size (not Fit to page) and header/footer scaling is disabled. Browsers and printer drivers default to scaling for hidden margins; that scaling will shrink your ruling. In Chrome / Edge: go to the print dialog → More settings → Scale → set to 100%. In Adobe Reader: in the print dialog, choose Actual size under Page Sizing & Handling.
