About Silhouette America
Silhouette America has designed electronic cutting machines from its Lindon, Utah headquarters since 2009. The lineup centers on two families: the full-size Cameo cutters, built for 12-inch (and wider, on the Cameo 5 Alpha's extended mat) vinyl, cardstock, and fabric work, and the compact, portable Portrait line for smaller projects and crafters who need a machine that travels. Both run on Silhouette Studio, the company's own desktop design software.
That software is the detail that shows up most in our own testing: Silhouette Studio's core toolset, including cutting, tracing, and Print and Cut registration, is fully usable without a subscription, in contrast to competitors that gate their design library behind a recurring fee. The Cameo line has drawn coverage from craft and maker press, including a Make: magazine review that called it fast, accurate, and versatile enough to move between greeting cards and PCB etching. Silhouette also makes the Curio craft cutter and embosser, the Mint custom stamp maker, and the Alta 3D printer, extending the same no-subscription design philosophy across its catalog.

Why we recognized Silhouette America
The DeskRated Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose products consistently stand out in our hands-on category reviews. Silhouette America earned it on the strength of the products below, evaluated the same way every product on this site is: bought, used at a real desk, and judged on merit.
Silhouette America products we rated highly
Silhouette Cameo 5 Alpha
In our testing, Silhouette Studio ran with no mandatory subscription, in contrast to competitors that lock their full design library behind a monthly fee. The 50 dB motor measured quieter than the other machines on our list, and the 4-point registration system delivered the most precise Print and Cut alignment we tested, the kind of accuracy that matters most on sticker sheets and print-on-demand runs where registration drift ruins a batch.

Silhouette Portrait 4
At 4 pounds and 9 inches wide, this was the most portable cutting machine we tested, small enough to fit in a backpack or a desk drawer between projects. It carried the deepest review base on our craft-cutting list, with 2,890 ratings, and runs the same subscription-free Silhouette Studio software as the Cameo line, so crafters who travel to crop events or classrooms don't take on any recurring software cost.
