How to use this generator

  1. Pick a grid type. Isometric dots is the most popular for 3D object sketching and pixel-art planning — a triangular lattice of dots you connect freehand. Isometric lines adds the printed vertical + 60° lines for guided drafting. Triangular is the equilateral 0 / 60 / 120° grid used for tessellation art, quilting, and knitting charts. How this generator works (the math)

All calculations happen in points (1 inch = 72 points; 1 mm = 72/25.4 ≈ 2.835 points). The usable region is the paper dimension minus your margins and (when the header is on) a 24-point header offset:

Isometric and triangular grids are built on a triangular lattice, so the vertical distance between lattice rows is the spacing times √3⁄2 ≈ 0.866 — that ratio is what makes the triangles equilateral and the projection true 30°/30° isometric:

The isometric dot lattice offsets every other row by half a step (spacingPt / 2) so each dot sits at the centroid pattern of an equilateral triangle grid — the arrangement used on commercial isometric dot pads. Hex grids use flat-top tessellation: each hex of side s has horizontal column pitch 1.5 × s and row pitch √3 × s, with odd columns offset by half a row so the hexes interlock.

The spacing presets follow these conventions:

  • 1/4″ (6.35 mm) — the US isometric-pad standard, the spacing on most Clearprint and Staedtler isometric bond.
  • 5 mm — the international metric standard on European isometric pads.
  • 1 cm (10 mm) — large-scale metric, good for quick 3D roughs.
  • 1/8″ (3.175 mm) — fine isometric, for detailed model and part sketches.

Will the grid print at the exact size I selected?

Yes — but only if your printer dialog is set to Actual size (not Fit to page) and any header/footer scaling is off. Browsers default to shrinking for hidden margins. In Chrome / Edge: print dialog → More settings → Scale → 100%. In Adobe Reader: Page Sizing & Handling → Actual size. The PDF is vector, so it stays sharp at any zoom.
